A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
