“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.
