Delhi Rises to Dangerous Smog Post Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the capital registered an AQI above 500, which equals 10x the recommended level set by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x exceeding safe levels.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Developments

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the deadly pollution that covers the city as winter begins.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected regional administration petitioned the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".

Legal Verdict and Reality

To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also sparked a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

The dangerously high readings of pollution in Delhi have remained as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Near Diwali, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to spike to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Various Pollution Sources

This crisis in the city is attributed to a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in nearby regions of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million people calling home the capital region is significant, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities per year in the city.
