The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
