Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
