Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
