Prime Television Selections: 7 Essential Movies This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring critique tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the dreaded aspects of advancing years. The veteran actress presents a brilliant performance in the role of Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into starring in a fitness program on television. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome procedure known as "The Substance". This creates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship between the two. October 17th, Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful mystery stars the talented actress playing Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a break from covering international wars to embark on a high-end voyage accompanied by a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her spouse, and other filthy rich guests. However when an enigmatic female falls into the sea during the evening and everyone denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills in this innovative paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the filming device – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of sensing the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this self-referential adventure. He acts as an egotistical Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to appear at a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well without requiring a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has rendered the youth anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he fears the worst. But the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish film adaptation about the fallen televangelist and her felon spouse. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about profiting from the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Jessica Chastain succeeds to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as sharp as the polo necks used by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a mole within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are masters of calm composure, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
