The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
