Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to contest certain calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
